Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD or ARMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in those aged over 50. It causes a gradual loss of central vision. It is a major cause of blindness in older adults. As AMD progresses, a blurred area near the center of vision is a common symptom and gradually develop blank spots in central vision, which specially interferes with the ability to read and write. Those people suffering from diabetes and hypertension are prone to macular degeneration as well.

Optical Coherence Tomography, below named OCT, can obtain high-resolution images of different layers of the retina, providing a straightforward method of assessing retinal thickness which helps in early diagnosis and monitoring, epi-retinal membrane, macular lamellar hole and AMD.
